Built for life by the forest

A town that knows wildfire. What a Slave Lake roof can and can't do.

In May 2011 wildfire burned into Slave Lake and destroyed about a third of the town. In July 2025 a lightning fire to the northeast put the town on evacuation alert again. Winters on Lesser Slave Lake are long. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof can do about each, and what it can't.

Class A

What FireSmart asks of a roof

FireSmart Alberta warns that embers can travel long distances and land on a roof, recommends Class A roofing, advises against wood shakes and shingles, and says to clear leaves and needles off the roof regularly. We can build the roof as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the aluminum. Aluminum does not burn, but no roof is fireproof.

Another alert, July 2025

On July 20, 2025 lightning started a wildfire about 20 km northeast of Slave Lake, and the town and parts of the MD of Lesser Slave River were put on evacuation alert.

Winter

Snow, cold and ice dams

Snow slides off aluminum, so snow guards go on the quote above doors and decks. Ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic; the material warranty excludes ice damming, so we check insulation and ventilation with you. Aluminum takes on no water and cannot rust through a long winter.

Permits

Town or MD

In town, permits are the Town of Slave Lake's; in Widewater and the rest of the countryside, the MD of Lesser Slave River's. Whether a re-roof needs one depends on the work, so we confirm it for your address.

Why Slave Lake homeowners choose aluminum

A Slave Lake roof built to stay. From the company that installs it.

Our crews

Installed by the company you hire

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs every roof with its own crews. The company that quotes your Slave Lake roof puts it on and answers for the labour warranty.

Slate

Slate, almost every time

Nearly every Slave Lake roof in our job book is Slate. Shake, Cedar Shingle, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam are also made, in nine colours; each needs a slope of at least 3/12.

Weight

Light on the frame

The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile. We inspect the rafters and decking and write any repair into the quote.

Tear-off

Cedar comes off

Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before an Interlock roof goes on, as do concrete tile and natural slate. One layer of asphalt can stay only if the inspection finds it suitable.

Warranties

Two warranties, in writing

Interlock Roofing's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the aluminum and its finish while the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded. Our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covers the installation.

Canada

Made in Canada

Interlock Roofing makes the panels in Delta, BC; an Alberta company, Canadian owned and operated since 1999, installs them.

Recycled

Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

Straight answers

Slave Lake roofing questions, answered.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Slave Lake?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta since 1999, installs every Slave Lake roof with its own crews. Our only office is in Calgary; there is no northern or Edmonton-area office, so the consultation is on Zoom or at your home. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Slave Lake?

It depends on the work. In town, permits are the Town of Slave Lake's; in Widewater and the countryside, the MD of Lesser Slave River's. Structural repairs such as rebuilt decking are the usual reason a permit is needed. We confirm it for your address before we start.

Is a metal roof fireproof?

No roof is fireproof. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises against wood shakes and shingles. Our roofs can be built as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum does not burn, and FireSmart's advice covers the whole property, not just the roof.

How does an aluminum roof handle hail and storms in Slave Lake?

Well, but no roof is immune to hail. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. The material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), so storm damage is a matter for your home insurance.

Which communities does slavelakeroofing.com cover?

The Town of Slave Lake and the hamlet of Widewater. The rest of Northern Alberta is on edmontonmetalroofing.com: the same company, crews and warranties.

What does a metal roof cost in Slave Lake?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from Interlock® roofs signed in the Edmonton and Northern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. They are a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price. The consultation and the written quote are free.
